Three years ago, the EU activated the Temporary Protection Directive, providing a safe haven for millions of people fleeing the war in Ukraine. The action was a demonstration of Europe's unity and solidarity in providing protection to the displaced, including the right to reside, work or to have access to education.
With temporary protection currently extended until March 2026, time is running out to find long-term solutions and provide the predictability that people need to build their lives with dignity. There is still no clear plan for what comes next. Some countries, including the Czech Republic, are already preparing pathways for the transition from temporary protection to another legal status. However, the current proposal is not a suitable or sufficient solution for the majority of refugees who do not qualify.
The Consortium, together with 109 other organisations, including Caritas Europa, Amnesty International, calls on the EU and its Member States to shift from emergency measures to long-term strategies and solutions. People need security in order to live in dignity.
